One disadvantage that I was not aware of prior to purchasing is that you cannot use this machine for a chest workout because of safety concerns. Manual states: "Electrodes used for electrical stimulation should not be applied across the chest because the introduction of electrical currents into the chest may cause rhythm disturbances to the heart."
Another disadvantage is the electorde pads are somewhat inconvenient and must be replaced at a cost.
I do recommend this product. It is great to have while traveling.
