Cathe Friedrich's STS 40 DVD set + User Guide Review

Cathe Friedrich's STS 40 DVD set + User Guide

(More customer reviews)
All together, I liked this set of DVDs. It provides enough variety for those of us who have been working out for a long time and steps it up a notch. Pros: The workouts are challenging (if not enough, you can always increase weight). Quality is pretty good, all exercises have been labeled and are easy to follow the reps and timing.
Cons: I think the reps are a bit short, 16 at the most. I think for endurance you could go to 24 but then again that's a personal choice. What I really didn't like about it was that it seemed like they are the same 3 DVDs(#1 Chest, Shoulders and Biceps #2 Back and Triceps #3 Legs ), just repeated 4 time in 4 sets with minor variations. Ex: all the 4 Leg workout DVDs are almost the same(except for the 10 minute bonus), the only thing that's different is your %RM. She could have just told you to increase the weight by 5% every week but instead, she reproduced almost the same DVD just asking you to increase your weights. I think that is a marketing scheme which I really didn't care for. It's kinda expensive if you are really getting 3-4 hours of really new material but paying for 12hrs.I probably will not buy STS2 if its the same DVDs just higher %RM.

Cathe Friedrich's STS Mesocycle #1 (12 DVD set) Review

Cathe Friedrich's STS Mesocycle #1 (12 DVD set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What I liked
1. Amazing quality
2. Newer moves
3. Challenging with a lot of variety. Comes with 12 discs.
4. Workouts are mapped out for you. You use 3 discs a week and do 2 days of cardio of your own choice. These workouts are only strength training. This review is of mesocycle 1 only.
What I didn't like
1. You can't just push play. This series banks highly on finding your 1-rep max. If you don't pick a weight that is challenging you'll probably think this series is to easy. Your last rep has to leave you struggling.
2. Way to much time is spent on equipment set up. If you don't have a large workout space like me you'll find this really annoying. The list of equipment is large here. Dumbbells 3-30lbs (depending on your ability), step (and mini step if you have it) with at least 4 risers on each side, barbell (up to 40-50lbs depending on your ability), medium tension band, chair, gliding discs (or paper plates), stability ball, and over the door tubing for pull up style exercises if you don't have a pull up tower.
3. The music truly disappointed me. I was used to the high energy upbeat music on her other DVD's. It is hard to explain what it is like but if you want a sample her website has nice previews. That is pretty much what you get as far as music is concerned. It was hardly motivating to me.
4. Price, way to expensive! And to charge extra for a workout guide and abs. I mean you would expect that for this price you'd get more.
5. Packaging is terrible. I foresee this thing falling apart real quick and for the price I had to pay that is truly disappointing.
Summary
Is this a P90X knock off (for everyone that might get offended by this comment lets face it and truth is that Tony's P90X came out first), . . .well yeah of course it is. I have P90X did one rotation and never did it again (I just didn't like Tony's style) so STS is obviously better to me. You'll notice certain similarities such as the phrase "Get ready set go", the clip board writing down your weight thing, and the stopping to get a drink of water. What I did like about P90X that STS did not have was the fact that P90X did not have a whole lot of equipment needed. I mean it is hard enough to fit in 1 hour a day having to need more money for equipment does not exactly make this attainable for everyone and P90X came with just about everything STS comes with for cheaper. Yes you get more DVD's with STS (if you buy all three cycles) but I didn't feel like the variety with all the extra DVD's was enough to make it worth having to charge more. I preferred having Cathe's premixes as in other workouts. You will see a whole lot of repeat moves in these 12 discs that it makes you wonder why they just didn't lessen the number of discs, . . I mean more is not always better. Oh did I mention that set up time is irritating and time consuming.
Is it worth it, . . . .
Unfortunately I can't say that it is. If you are a true Cathe fan such as myself buy it, but only if you have disposable income. Your library would not be complete. If not and you are wondering if there is something cheaper and just as effective yeah, there is get her Gym Style series, legs, chest, shoulders, biceps, and triceps and back series. This is cheaper and truly effective. You will need a step, dumbbells, barbell, ball, and band though.
Does it work?
Heck yeah Cathe works, I haven't finished this whole series but I would not doubt its effectiveness. Since I started my home workouts with Cathe back in 2000 I now run 20-25 miles a week can do 40 "boy" push ups in a row and 3 pull ups (okay I'm still working on increasing that to 10) but at 33 I'm stronger and leaner than I have ever been in my life. I have muscle definition in my arms and legs and my kids think I'm "cool." Cathe is totally awesome, but unfortunately I would have to say that this series was not worth the money. Heck you can't win them all.
Oh one other thing. If you do plan on buying buy from Amazon. This seller actually has a return policy and if you buy from Cathe direct it is all final sale no returns.

STS - Mesocycle #3 + 4 Optional Leg - Squat Rack Routines (12 DVD set) Review

STS - Mesocycle #3 + 4 Optional Leg - Squat Rack Routines (12 DVD set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the third cycle in Cathe's Shock Training System (STS). You're lifting 80-90% of your 1 rep max and it's tough! I love all the Mesocycles, but this one is by far my favorite because it makes me feel so strong. I also love the Squat Rack Routine for legs; there's a different routine for each of the four weeks of Mesocycle 3.
What I especially loved about this DVD set:
**It's inspiring to see my progress. I followed the suggestion to continually increase my weights by 5% and I successfully lifted 90% of my one rep max.
**It works! I'm lifting heavier than I have ever lifted, even heavier than when I was working out with a personal trainer. I'm also more toned than I have ever been.
**The rest periods. The 3 minute rest between each set for a body part really helped me lift heavy with good form for the entire workout.
**The Squat Rack routines really shaped my legs like nothing else; they were more effective for me than the Plyo Leg routines.
Some things to note about this Mesocycle:
**Since you are lifting very heavy, you need to be extra safe. For chest presses and chest flies, I didn't lift my heaviest because I didn't have a spotter and I didn't feel safe lifting on my own. I was afraid the weights would come crashing down on my face with the chest presses. With the chest flies, I was afraid I was going to tweak my shoulders.
**It takes some creativity to lift heavy for the Squat Rack leg routines. I don't have a squat rack, so I improvised with a weighted vest, weights in a knapsack and a weighted belt (created by stringing two ankle weight belts together). I did all this so I didn't have to lift more than 45 pounds on my barbell.
**The rest periods can seem very long, especially if you're used to doing more endurance type workouts and moving quickly from one exercise to the next. I love heavy weight training so the rest periods didn't seem too long to me.
**Cathe keeps talking after the rest period is over. This is when she'll give form pointers for the upcoming exercise. I usually start the set as soon as the time is up. Otherwise, my arms fatigue from holding the weights and I can't finish my reps. She should give those form pointers during the rest period.
**the target weight calculations are too low by 1-2 pounds. It's odd since the calculations in the other two mesocycles are accurate. I went through and manually recalculated my target weight so that I was truly lifting my maximum weight.
**You'll most like need extra sleep during this mesocycle. You're putting a lot of strain on your body and you need time to recover.
I highly recommend this mesocycle as a way to really build up your strength. For best results, I suggest doing all three mesocycles and taking the time to calculate your one rep max.

STS mesocycle #3 + 4 bonus Leg - Squat Rack DVDs (16 DVD set)Mesocycle 3 is all about strength and divided into the 3 muscle groupings with 4 workouts per grouping:#1 Chest and Back#2 Shoulders, Biceps and Triceps#3 LegsYou'll lift weights that are 80-90% of your 1RM during these four weeks. Your rep range will be around six to eight reps for most exercises. This method will allow your different muscle groups to always have at least two to three minutes of rest, which research shows is the minimum necessary time to replenish the body's various energy cycles needed for a high intensity workout. The first week you are going to do four sets of eight reps for every exercise, resting two to three minutes between each set of the same muscle group. Do the same for weeks two and three, but increase your weight by 5% for each workout and decrease your reps by one. On your fourth and final workout for this mesocycle, you will do eight reps again, just as in week one, but you'll use the weight you used in your second workout. If everything goes as planned you should be 5% stronger at the end of this mesocycle. The Plyo-Workout is for those who don't own a squat rack and will focus on explosive strength utilizing plyometric moves mixed with traditional leg strength training exercises. If you wish to follow a true strength program and want to follow the same 5% Method used in the upper body workouts in this cycle, then select the Squat Rack workout option.

Cathe Friedrich's Low Impact Step + Total Body Sculpting DVD Review

Cathe Friedrich's Low Impact Step + Total Body Sculpting DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this low impact workout. It's a switch in pace for Cathe but it's still a fun and challenging workout. You will definately burn fat and calories here. The step workout is about 29-30 minutes and then there is a toning segment too. It is more geared toward a less advanced exerciser, but everyone will get benefits from this. The cardio features faster/slower intervals and has lots of interesting-but-doable combos (e.g. "around the world," "rocking horse" - which aren't new). It's mostly low impact, but does have some higher-impact bursts. In the toning segment, you will use a stability ball for almost all of the exercises. You also need some weights too. I enjoy doing this, and as I said earlier - it is fun and motivating. Go get this and do it 4 times a week along with other dvds to keep up your interest.

It will shape, define, and strengthen your muscles - all while giving you the health benefits of maintaining strong bones. It is very easy to follow and requires very little equipment. Just a stability ball and a set of handweights. Do this workout two times a week and you will feel the difference immediately (and see the difference shortly thereafter). Cathe Friedrich's Core Max DVD Review

Cathe Friedrich's Core Max DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD is great value for money - each workout is just the right length, challenging without being too difficult, and varied enough so that you won't get bored. (The "core" in the title is a little misleading, as these three workouts focus on the abdominal, rather than the back muscles.) An 8 pound medicine ball is recommended; it's used to add resistance to exercises like crunches, roll-ups and rocket shoots.
Cathe has a reputation for being hard core (no pun intended!) but I appreciate that she says things like "Don't worry if you don't have the endurance; it will come over time."
Here's a breakdown of the workouts.
Segment One - No equipment (20 minutes)
1) Supermans
2) Levitation holds
3) Hip lifts (bent leg)
4) Hip lifts (straight leg)
5) Corkscrew

9) Crunches with straight legs in air
10) Crunches with knees bent on floor
11) Three-level crunches
12) Rope climb crunches
13) Frog style crunches (second set)
14) Three-level crunches (second set) with pulses at the top
15) Axe crunches
16) Reverse crunches
17) Crunches with arms and legs extended
18) Reverse crunches (second set)
19) Straight leg prone plank
20) Hip dip planks
Segment Two - Stability Ball (20 minutes)
1) Supermans on ball
2) Roll outs
3) Roll ins
4) Roll ins for obliques (legs pull in on an angle)
5) Pikes on the ball
6) Crunches on top of ball
7) Long lever ball exchange (holding the ball between your feet and crunching up to transfer the ball to your hands)
8) Vertical oblique rotations with legs straight in air
9) Side-to-side chops

Cathe Friedrich's STS Mesocycle #2 (12 DVD set) Review

Cathe Friedrich's STS Mesocycle #2 (12 DVD set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to admit that I was very skeptical about purchasing the complete DVD set because of the price. So I chose to buy the Mesocycle #2. I am 40 and have been working out with P90X for the past 9 months with great success and decided to try Cathe's system just for variety. I considered myself in great shape and have worked out for years.
Pros: I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was out of shape for this series despite 9 months of P90X. I didn't realize how much strength I loss working out with P90X. Granted my endurance improved with P90X, but my strength took a backseat. With Cathe's workouts, I really had to push myself, especially with the leg workouts. The leg workouts were so much better than the P90X leg/back DVD. My strength improved on a weekly basis. I really don't see myself returning to P90X. Her workouts hit my lower back muscles much harder than P90X; again this was a good thing. The Chest, Shoulders, and Tricep workout blasted my triceps. After my P90X workouts, I would feel tired and sore for a few days. After an STS workout, I felt just awful! Sore and run down like I had the flu. My recovery period improved every week as I grew stronger and the awful feeling quickly went away. I believe I am in much better shape now that I have been working out with Cathe's system.
Cons: The warm ups could be much better. In fact, I use the P90X warm ups before my STS workouts because they do a better job. It would also be nice to have a workout schedule so I could anticipate the exercises during my workout and have a much better way to keep track of my progress. Too often, I have to pause the DVD to set up for my exercises. I never had this problem with P90X. At times, some of the performers have poor form and Cathe doesn't stop to correct them. You do need a lot of equipment, especially dumbbells. I have a set of Powerblocks but I still find myself racing to switch between sets to keep up. Especially with the drop sets. Lastly, this is not circuit training and you will lose some endurance.
Despite the shortcomings, this is an excellent workout series. I highly recommend this for the P90X fans out there because they will be surprised to find that the STS Meso#2 does a much better job at building muscles than P90X. I will purchase the other sets, #1 and #3. I do believe that the quality justifies the cost.

Includes all 12 DVDs from mesocycle #2. Included:1. STS mesocycle #2 (12 DVD set)Mesocycle 2Mesocycle 2 focuses on hypertrophy, or more simply, muscle building and definition. You will be lifting a weight that is 70-80% of your 1RM during these four weeks. Once again, each week will feature a different workout for every muscle group. Your rep range will be around eight to twelve reps for most exercises and because of the increased intensity you will need a longer rest break of 60-90 seconds between sets. The one exception to this is the leg routine where you will do three tri-sets each for three rounds. Your only rest will come after completing one round of each tri-set. The leg routines in this mesocycle will be very tough.Training concepts such as double wave loading and back off sets will be used to push you like never before. This cycle is divided into three muscle groupings with four workouts per grouping:#1 Chest, Shoulders and Triceps#2 Back and Biceps#3 LegsUnlike Mesocycle 1, Mesocycle 2 works each body part until completion before moving on to the next body part. In other words you will do all of your chest exercises before moving on to shoulders. You will then complete all of your shoulder exercises before moving on to triceps and so on.Extended StretchYou will notice that every workout concludes with our signature STS extended bonus stretch. This relaxing and thorough stretch is designed to restore and increase flexibility, relieve stress and improve overall circulation to the muscles and joints. It will also aid in muscle recovery. Cathe Friedrich's Butts & Guts DVD Review

Cathe Friedrich's Butts and Guts DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have seen my other Cathe reviews, you'll know that I think she is fantastic and makes you work hard, yet she's motivating and keeps it interesting. In this dvd, you will work your trouble spots very hard and it is tough (but well worth pushing through). The results can be found if you do the workout often.
There is a wide spectrum of exercises here. Every possible movement is done (like your squats and lunges etc) and you will be feeling it in no time. You start with standing workout that work the glutes and then classic floor moves like side leg lifts and inner thigh work. You WILL fatigue your muscles (in a good way). Following all of this, there is intense ab work and she uses hand weights and ankle weights to up the ante.
The other thing you should know, is that there is a lot of equipment needed (one reason I dropped a star in the rating). You need different amounts of weights, barbell, stability ball, resistance bands and a high step platform. Personally for me, if I need this much equipment, I'd rather go to the gym. Cathe is one tough trainer, but she will give you results. After doing this workout for the first time, I didn't think I'd be able to make it out of bed the next morning. It was a good sore, so you know you've worked out well. I really recommend this, but not if you haven't used your glute or ab muscles in some time.

Gaiam Kettlenetics Slim and Tone Kit Review

Gaiam Kettlenetics Slim and Tone Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchase the kettlenetics program when it first came out in June 2008. Within the first week I started to notice a difference. It is a fun workout that targets all different muscle groups. One con that I did have in the beginning was that I had trouble following the routine. I am not naturally coordinated and have no dance background, so while following the quicker paced movements might be easy for some, it took me a few days to be able to get through the routine. If you are going to do this program I also recommend additional cardiovascular training. I was not in shape at all when I started and could barely get through a video without stopping to catch my breath.
Overall if you are willing to put in the time and the effort this is a great tool to get slim and toned

ROCKIN MODELS Workout DVD with Grace Lazenby Review

ROCKIN MODELS Workout DVD with Grace Lazenby
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first workout from Grace Lazenby, and I really like it. I had read positive reviews of this workout on a fitness forum, and decided to give it a try. I've been doing a lot of barre-style workouts lately (Physique 57 and Core Fusion), and am happy to add this in to my rotation.
The time just flew by with this workout! The screen uses other shots of the beach, Grace and the backup exercisers dancing, scenes of the Santa Monica boardwalk, and nature views that are placed on a split-screen next to the exercisers. If you're familiar with Cindy Crawford's workouts or Tracey Effinger's Squeeze workouts, which cut to different scenes, you'll be a bit familiar with this format.
The music for this is from three male artists (the "rock" aspect of the Rockin Models workout), and each section of the workout is choreographed to the music. I loved the music, and it reminded me of John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Coldplay.
To do the workout, you'll need a pole of some sort (I used my barbell bar, but I'm sure a broomstick handle would also work), a yoga mat, a small hand towel, a playground ball, and an optional hat for fun. The workout is done barefoot.
Also, the workout description says that it's 65 minutes, but it actually comes in at just under 72 minutes, so it's a pretty long workout.
The workout is described as a combo of yoga, barre, and burlesque, and that's exactly what it felt like. It's divided into several main sections:
* The first section is thirteen minutes of flow yoga, beginning with some sun salutations.
* The next two segments use the pole/stick to work the legs, especially the thighs and rear. The hat is used in the second section sections for the burlesque vibe; I felt a bit silly at first, but then just loosened up and had fun with it! This section was similar to barre workouts, and it was very easy on the knees.

*After that, there is another flow yoga interlude, this time with more modifcations shown.
*Next comes another section using the pole (and optional hat) that incorporates ballet-style moves (arabesques, etc.).
*Then come three core training sections on the mat that use variations of V-sits and oblique twists.
* After that come several sections of lying leg work, including bridge work to target the buns and backs of the legs, clam-style work for the inner and outer thighs, and various other moves set to burlesque-style music.
*The workout concludes with a stretch. There are some really nice variations on these moves that I hadn't seen before that also made the workout feel fresh to me. For instance, the bridge portion doesn't do regular bridges, but has you alternate legs and tap each leg onto the opposite knee. Many other exercises also felt fresh in this way, in that Grace put a nice spin on an older exercise to keep it interesting.
To do the yoga sections, you'll probably want to be familiar with some poses such as Warrior 1 and 2, Crescent Pose, Down Dog, and Side Angle Pose. Since there is no explanation of proper form for these moves, you'll want to be already familiar with them, although the exercisers do show three levels of modifcations.
If you want to make the workout shorter, you can probably skip the yoga poses that are at the beginning, but you may not feel properly stretched out.
As much as I loved the workout, there are a few reasons why I'm giving it four stars. First, there was little arm work in this workout, as it seemed to concentrate mostly on legs and abs, except for the arm work in the yoga sections. For a workout this long (about 72 minutes), it would have been nice to have some arm and back work thrown in. Also, Grace's voice was really hard for me to hear over the music. I played with the settings on my TV to try to rectify this, but still had a hard time hearing her instructions in places. I also felt like her cueing could have been stronger in places during the yoga sections, especially when doing moves where you can't see the screen. I'm sure that after I do the workout a few more times, I'll get to know the moves better, but it was a bit frustrating at times to not be able to have better cues.
Overall, though, I really, really liked this workout, and know I'll use it a lot. Grace's personality is friendly and encouraging. I will be sure to update my review after I do the workout again if I can think of anything else to add to it. UPDATE FROM THE NEXT DAY: The day after doing this workout, I was really sore in my glutes, outer thighs, and obliques! This workout really targeted those areas in good ways!

Kelly Coffey-Meyer's 30-Minutes to Fitness Muscle Definition DVD Review

Kelly Coffey-Meyer's 30-Minutes to Fitness Muscle Definition DVD

First, I want to recommend this for the intermediate - advanced because there are many new moves and you have to be very careful of your form. You also can not let your mind drift off because these are movements where you need to be aware of your ability. Kelly uses various hand weights-she goes for the heavier ones plus a step and a mat/towel. This DVD sold me on the 30-minutes in the title.
The 2-30 minute workout segments are packed with combination moves. Kelly demonstrates the newer moves and the pace is acceptable. Watch out for her form during the dead lifts (not the one legged) because it's questionable whether to bend back so much! I found that she focused mostly on the upper body. There are lunges and squats, but she combines them with upper body moves. I also on occasion, work out to the abs section-it's short and intensive mixed with old school moves with oblique twists, planks with leg twists. I liked it when she said don't bother counting, just do as much as you can, and I took that with me when I worked out with her again. To end, I will definitely watch out for more of Kelly's DVDs because there are always several options offered in the menu, my preference for working out with women around my age, and she comes up with fresh, new moves to beat boredom.

Cathe Friedrich's Muscle Max DVD + FREE Resistance Band Review

Cathe Friedrich's Muscle Max DVD + FREE Resistance Band
Average Reviews:

I love Cathe Friedrich's workouts. She's energetic and encouraging, but not too much so (think Denise Austin...I just can't take that level of perky). Plus, her workouts don't pull any punches--they're designed to challenge you and push you to challenge yourself.
I regularly do several other of Cathe Friedrich's workouts (Muscle Endurance, Pyramid Upper & Lower Body, Supersets). I love them all for variety, but I think Muscle Max is my favorite. It is 68 minutes of a complete workout--upper body, lower body, and core, with barbell, dumbells, and resistance band. You get it all. (You don't need a barbell, however. All exercises can be done with dumbells alone.)
Better yet, you can choose what you want to do. The DVD comes with "Premixed" workouts loaded. If you don't have time for the 68-minute full workout, you can do the 42-minute upper body, the 23-minute lower body, or the 53-minute "time saver." OR you can go to a "Mix & Match" section to choose your own specific exercises from the entire DVD.
The "Mix and Match" section has its drawbacks--it takes a while for the DVD to switch out of the program, into the menu, and back into a program, which makes this the most inconvenient of the options. However, it's great if you want to match up one of the premixed workouts with the core workout, or if you just have time for one small group of exercises (say, triceps.)
I LOVE this DVD. It is the most comprehensive and flexible strength training workout I've ever done, and I've done a bunch, including many from The Firm series. I highly recommend this one.
